Thuringian Emigrates Database

Discovering our emigrants

Off to Brazil!

Our ancestors emigrated to North America in many cases. However, some families also sought and sometimes found their fortune in Brazil.

We are happy about very active contacts to our Brazilian researcher friends, to whom we would like to express our special thanks at this point. The picture shows a map of the Colônia Dona Francisca in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.

We build bridges.

Welcome to our emigrant database!

On these pages you will find the results of many years of research work from various sources. However, the research is far from complete, we are only at the beginning. So don't be sad if your emigrant is not yet to be found, but help us to complete the data further.

With a small team we gather the emigrants of the former Thuringian small states as well as the Thuringian parts of the Prussian province Saxony. Different sources and provinces do not exactly facilitate the work. A large part has certainly emigrated to the USA, but we also find our Thuringians in South America, Africa, Australia as well as in South and Eastern Europe. Some of them just wanted to emigrate, died during the passage of a ship or just moved to a neighbouring village in the neighbouring small state.

We can and will never achieve completeness of the data. The sources are often too thin for this. Spellings, name changes, wrong or missing birth and death data ensure that not every fate can be clarified.

Do you have any information that might help us? Then write to us!

A few hints for use:

  • You do not need a user ID! You won't get more information with it either.
  • We are sorry, but we can't process research requests. Believe us, we have more questions than you!
  • You can choose your preferred language in the top right corner of the menu. We have limited ourselves to the most important languages. Maybe not everything is translated correctly, we are not interpreters but genealogists.
  • John August Roebling

Johann August Roebling from Muehlhausen is one of the most famous Thuringian emigrants. We owe him and his family the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. We want to do it in a certain way like him. Not with stones, mortar and steel cables but with our common ancestors. Hence our motto:

    We build bridges.
